Native Americans had lived in the Seattle area for at least 4,000 years before the arrival of the first permanent European settlers. On November 13, 1851, Arthur A. Denny and his company of passengers, later known as the Denny Party, arrived at Alki Point through Portland, Oregon, on the schooner Exact. Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson, and others got their start in the jazz scene. Seattle is also home to rock legend Jimi Hendrix, as well as the bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Heart, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, and the grunge alternative rock movement.
