Information about Everett
Everett is the county seat of and the largest city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. It is a major city in the Seattle metropolitan area and the Puget Sound region, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Seattle. With 110,629 residents as of the 2020 census, Everett is the state’s seventh-largest city by population. The city is principally located on a peninsula at the mouth of the Snohomish River that stretches to the south and west along Port Gardner Bay, an inlet of Possession Sound (which is part of Puget Sound).
The Snohomish people used to live on the Port Gardner Peninsula, with a winter settlement called Hibulb near the river’s mouth. Loggers and homesteaders first arrived in the area in the 1860s, but it wasn’t until 1890 that plans for a city were planned. A group of East Coast capitalists looking to develop a major industrial city bought land in the area and filed a plat for “Everett,” which they named after investor Charles L. Colby’s son Everett. The city was founded in 1893, shortly after the Great Northern Railway arrived, and it grew into a major lumber center with several huge sawmills. After many elections and a Supreme Court case, Everett was named the county seat in 1897 after a dispute with Snohomish. During the 1910s, the city was a hotbed of labor unrest, culminating in the Everett Massacre in 1916, which killed several members of the Industrial Workers of the World.
