Spokane is the largest city in Spokane County, Washington, and the county seat. The Spokane tribe (whose name means “children of the sun” in Salishan) were the first people to settle in the area, and they subsisted on abundant wildlife. This trading post was Washington’s first long-term European settlement. The Northern Pacific Railway opened in 1881, bringing residents to the Spokane area. Gold and silver were discovered in the Inland Northwest in the late nineteenth century. Until the 1980s, the local economy was based on mining, forestry, and agriculture. After the Great Fire of 1889, architect Kirtland Kelsey Cutter designed several of the older Romanesque Revival-style structures in the downtown area. Riverfront and Manito parks, the Smithsonian-affiliated Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, the Davenport Hotel, and the Fox and Bing Crosby theaters are all located in the city.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane is housed in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, while the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane is housed in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is served by the Spokane Washington Temple, which is located in the county’s east end. The Jesuits created Gonzaga University in 1887, and the private Presbyterian Whitworth University followed three years later, moving to north Spokane in 1914.

Fairchild Air Force Base, as well as two huge casino hotels, are located in the city’s western suburb of Airway Heights.
