Information about Prescott

Prescott is a city in the Arizona county of Yavapai. The city had 45,827 residents according to the 2020 Census. Yavapai County is headquartered in the city. Prescott was named the Arizona Territory’s capital in 1864, replacing the temporary capital of Fort Whipple. In 1867, the Territorial Capital was relocated to Tucson. Prescott was named Territorial Capital once more in 1877, until Phoenix took it in 1889.

Prescott has a long history as a gold and silver mining town on the frontier. Native American tribes in the area, including as the Yavapai and Apache, were frequently at odds with miners and settlers. From the beginning, Prescott was home to Fort Whipple, which served as a base for campaigns against indigenous. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, Prescott was an archetypal “wild west” town, with people such as Doc Holliday and Virgil Earp of the O.K. Corral gunfight. Several times throughout the first decade of the twentieth century, the improvised wooden town burned to the ground, forcing the town to be rebuilt in brick. Tourism is the lifeblood of the modern city, particularly in its historic districts. It is home to the “World’s Oldest Rodeo,” which has been going on since 1888. The rodeo, which is one of the most well-known in the United States, attracts around 35,000 visitors each year.

Prescott Valley, 7 miles (11 towns) east; Chino Valley, 16 miles (26 kilometers) north; Dewey-Humboldt, 13 miles (21 kilometers) east; and Prescott make up the “Quad-City” area. This term is also used to describe central Yavapai County, which includes the towns of Mayer, Paulden, Wilhoit, and Williamson Valley. In 2007, the area’s population was 103,260, including these smaller settlements. Prescott is the heart of the Prescott Metropolitan Area, which includes all of Yavapai County, according to the US Census Bureau.
