Information about Arizona

Arizona is a state in the western United States that is divided into two subregions: Southwestern and Mountain. Of the 50 states, it is the 6th largest and 14th most populous. Phoenix is the state’s capital and largest city. Arizona shares the Four Corners region with Utah to the north, Colorado to the northeast, and New Mexico to the east; Nevada to the northwest, California to the west, and the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California to the south and southwest are its other states.

Arizona was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1912, as the 48th and last of the contiguous states. It was historically part of New Spain’s Alta California territory before becoming part of independent Mexico in 1821. Mexico relinquished much of this territory to the United States in 1848 after being defeated in the Mexican–American War. The Gadsden Purchase, which took place in 1853, gave the state its southernmost section.

The desert climate of southern Arizona is known for its scorching summers and moderate winters. Northern Arizona is known for its pine, Douglas fir, and spruce forests, the Colorado Plateau, mountain ranges (such as the San Francisco Mountains), and large, deep canyons, all of which are characterized by cooler summer temperatures and heavy winter snowfall. Ski resorts may be found at Flagstaff, Alpine, and Tucson. There are various national forests, national parks, and national monuments in addition to the internationally known Grand Canyon National Park, which is one of the world’s seven natural wonders.

Because of migration into the state during the 1950s, Arizona’s population and economy have exploded, and the state is now a significant Sun Belt hub. Large, vast suburban areas have sprung up around cities like Phoenix and Tucson. Arizona is home to renowned colleges such as the University of Arizona and Arizona State University, as well as many large corporations such as PetSmart and Circle K. Though it voted Democratic in the 1996 presidential election and the 2020 presidential and senatorial elections, the state is traditionally known with national Republican figures such as Barry Goldwater and John McCain.

The population of Arizona is diverse. About a fifth of the state is made up of Indian reservations, which are home to 27 federally recognized Native American tribes, including the Navajo Nation, which has over 300,000 residents and is the largest in the state and the United States. Because of migration from Mexico, the proportion of Hispanics in the state’s population has increased dramatically during the 1980s. In terms of religion, the Catholic Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints each have significant populations (LDS Church).
